“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1
Your kids call you “Mom”. To them, your name is “Mom”. A name is defined as “a word or a combination of words by which a person… is designated, called, or known”. Our kids do not know us by any other name until we tell them. Have you ever seen the questioning look on a childs face when they learn their mommy’s first name? It’s foreign to them.
In the bible there is so much emphasis on names – like Isaac means “laughter” because Sarah had laughed when she was told she would be pregnant in her old age. God also changed names in the bible – Jacob to Israel, Simon to Peter, and Saul to Paul. The reason for God changing someone’s name is because they are radically changed in some way – a life change that would make them a different person. Also, it was almost always something that made them GREATER.
When we become a Mother, our name is changed to “Mom”. Our lives will forever be changed and for the better. How AWESOME is that?!?! Forever changed and given a NEW name that only the most important people in our lives will call us!!
It is our identity, given to us by God Himself. Some mothers today prefer to be known by other names thinking that they are “just a mom”. They prefer “writer”, “doctor”, “florist”, etc. But God shows in His word the significance of mothers. We are called to train up our children and pour our Christ-like identity into them — That is significant.
“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and,I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” – 2 Timothy 1:5
I recall when my little Hope (now 4 years old) spoke her first word it was “Mama”. It melted my heart. She had no idea how imperfect I am, no worries since she knows I am always there when she calls, and she could care less what I look like at 4 in the morning. This was GREAT! However, she has now caught on and sees who her mom really is, a sinner saved by grace and fighting the good fight of faith with Jesus. I pray that I am able to pour into her life all that I have learned of this faith walk, and be worthy of the name “Mom”.
The book of Revelation tells us that all believers will be given a new name for eternity, a secret name that we don’t yet know. I believe that name will be the best name possible, but until that time, the name Mom is just perfect!
Let’s embrace the God-Given name we have today as “Mom” and revel in all that it means…that we are blessed!
“Her children arise and call her blessed” – Proverbs 31:28
