Every spring as we start to hit the playgrounds, baseball fields, and meet up with friends outside, I am reminded that I need to stock my homemade first aid kit.
It seems like the first day my kids have shorts on they skin their knee or get a full-on gash with blood dripping everywhere.
Band-aids? Do I have any with me? Maybe, if I restocked the first aid kit.
This year I am ready….bring on the injuries. OK, not really.
I don’t like it when my kids get hurt, but it is inevitable with my wild explorers, and this momma wants to be ready to kiss the boo-boos and tend to those wounds.
I keep a full first aid kit in my car at all times but try to get new items and re-stock it each year.
To perfectly stock yours like a boss, grab my FREE DIY First Aid Kit Checklist below.
So what should you put inside??
I did my research, and checked the web the American Red Cross site, to put together my DIY kit.
Here are some key items to get on hand quick!
- bandaids
- first aid spray
- Neosporin
- tweezers
- ace bandage
- instant cold packs
- gauze
- burn wipes
You will want to have a full kit stocked if you are planning some camping, hiking, and other travel days over the summer too. It is good to toss old and expired items too and replace them with new ones.
Looking for outdoor ideas? Check out this post and go for a walk!!
Additionally, if you are on a budget, then it is a bit cheaper to hit your local dollar store and get items. I find that many things expire before they are used and I would rather toss a couple bucks to have them available!
To store your items you can use a red container, plastic storage bag, or any plastic box that has a closure. You can even use an extra-large zip lock bag!
Whatever type of storage container you use, be sure it has a tight closure! You don’t want your precious items to empty in the back of the car!
The key is that you want to have enough space for any full-size bottles, and containers you will be putting inside. I buy antacids, acetaminophen, and a few other larger bottles, so my container has been growing over the past years.
I have certainly learned from experience….like not having what I needed the day my son broke out in hives from some tree leaves…over the past few years!
WANT SIMPLE? GET A KIT!
You can certainly purchase a completed first aid kit, but since I wanted to be intentional about the items I had on hand, I stock my own.
GRAB MY FIRST AID CHECKLIST
I have created a full CHECKLIST to share with you too! It is super simple and you can easily pull together your homemade first aid kit in no time!
There are the obvious items like band-aids and gauze, but you will also want to be sure to include some antiseptics for scrapes, hydrocortisone is great for bug bites (and unknown skin reactions), and an ace bandage can be used for simple sprains and other injuries.
We have some sensitive tummies in our home too so I like to be sure there are antacids in there.
Here is the complete list that I have put together for you to stock your homemade first aid kit in one stop. You might even have some things at home that you can use – kids scissors or medical scissors and tweezers for instance.
Print this out, share it, or save it for later. You can also head to my Summer Plans with Kids board on Pinterest for other mom hacks and summer ideas!!
That’s it!! Simple and practical!
Having a small supply of first aid items will really give you a sense of comfort while you are out and about this season!
Do you have a first aid kit in your bag or car? Do you have a story when you WISH you had a first aid kit on hand? I would love to hear and update anything I might have missed!
Best,

This is so handy! It’s also a great way to get kids involved in making one together and teaching them how to use everything in the kit.

Great thinking, Mihaela!! I did not involve mine this year, but one son is doing first aid class. I should have him review and share with his siblings!! Thanks!

Thanks for the checklist! I’m heading to audit my first aid kit now!
