As moms, we get to experience some crazy love from our kids. Just recently my little guy was in the shower and called out to me. “Mom?” I answered and went in the bathroom to check on him, “What is it, buddy?” “I love you, that’s all!” As I pulled the curtain back to see his cute little face, he puckered up asking for a wet kiss.
Oh. The. Love!!
God’s love is even greater than these perfect momma moments. He loves us like we love our little humans….even more!!
Understanding God’s love and experiencing it the deep places, is foundational to our relationship with Him. God’s love provides us with an assurance of protection and provision. When we grasp how deep His love is for us, we have less worry, less fear, less insecurity in all areas of our lives.

God Loves You
One of the most popular verses, and the key that shows us God’s deep love, is John 3:16 which most clearly states this “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
This gives us the full picture of what He did for each one of us. God made the ultimate sacrifice for you. Out of Love.

John goes further in his later letter of First John that restates these truths of how much He loves us:
He loves us, so He sacrificed for us. He died to take away our sin; the sin that separates us from Him. With a love so great and powerful, Jesus gave it all for you.
This is the gospel message. Man’s redemption by a just and loving God. He hated that we were separated from Him so He made the way for us. And it doesn’t end there. He can’t stop loving us.
No matter what you do, He will love you.

Jesus loves us so completely and perfectly. He knows us and knows just how to love us. He reminds us in Romans 8:39 that nothing can separate us from His love.
God’s Love is Deep
Once we see and understand that God Himself is love, God does not stop there. We can see in scripture the greatness and the depth of that love. We can begin with Paul’s letter to the Ephesians 3:14-21 (NIV)
14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a]in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Paul is praying for them and includes in this prayer that they would be able to “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ”.
There is a distinct depth to the love of Christ. It is so big and deep that we need to pray to be able to grasp it. Since we live in a fallen world, understanding God’s perfect love requires His revelation.
We humans think of love as a feeling, but God’s love is “agape” love.
There are four types of “love” used in the bible. Eros, Storge, Philio, and Agape. The first three – Eros, storge, and philio are used to communicate romantic love, familial love, and brotherly or friendly love. This is what we humans relate to and most often think of when we hear or use the word love. These are our emotional loves for those around us.
The last Greek word – agape, is the highest of the four types of love. When agape love is used in the Bible it defines God’s immeasurable, incomparable love for humankind. It is the divine love that comes from God. God’s agape love is perfect, unconditional, sacrificial, and pure. It is unlike any other kind of love.
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. – 1 John 4:10 (NIV)
God’s Love is Unchanging
Additionally, Paul prays for the church in Ephesus to know this love that surpasses knowledge. This further shows us the dependence we have on God to be able to understand His love. He even gives the purpose to why we should pray to know Gods love – to be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. That is life in abundance! The more we understand God’s love the more of an abundant life we can experience.
Another characteristic of God’s love is that it does not change. He will love you forever. Hebrews 13:8 tells us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” This means that since He is the same, so is His love. His love for us doesn’t change. The great preacher Charles Spurgeon was quoted as saying ”Nothing binds me to my Lord like a strong belief in His changeless love.”

David sang in Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever.” He had a full understanding of the deep love of God since David had experienced lots of different personal seasons with God. He fought and won great battles, suffered great losses, sinned and repented, and turned his heart back to God time and again.
David knew the unchanging love of God. He was always accepted back by his Savior.
God is Love
So – Why did God send His son? Why does He love us so much? Why does God want us to grasp and know this love of His?
Because God IS love — This simple statement from 1 John 4:8 sums it up. Love equals God and God equals love. Understanding God’s love brings us to a closer and deeper place with Him. It connects us to Jesus on a new level of depth where our relationship with Him begins to blossom. When we understand Jesus’ love for us we increase our faith, trust, and dependence on Him. Trusting in His love enables us to step out to do new things for Him and it opens us up to greater abundance.
“Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. – 1 Kings 8:23
