I just love the old classic Hymns!
When hearing them as a child I think I might have missed out on how full of goodness and peace they were. This is why I created A Simple Kids Hymn Study to share with you today.
As a mom, I quickly knew that I needed a kid’s hymn study as part of our home. I wanted to pass the cherished words of old on to my littles.
If you have ever listened carefully to Classic Hymns or done a hymn study then you know they are more than poetry.
Based on scripture, they are colorful truths that we can trust in as we commit them to our hearts.
Words by Fanny Crosby like “Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine” or the well known “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me”.
These words can bring such comfort and help us set our eyes above.
Once I was older and found a fresh, new relationship with Jesus, I discovered these old songs that bring God’s promises to life.
Using A Simple Kids Hymn Study is another way for your children to connect with Jesus and grow in their relationship. Hearing about God’s love, with a melody that will stick with them, is something your kids will retain for a lifetime.

PASSING ON A LOVE OF HYMNS
When my kids were little I resolved to make sure the old hymns would be part of their music collection. I searched for CD’s and DVD’s for them that were sung by children and they just loved them.

My oldest insisted on going to sleep to “To God Be the Glory” on repeat every night for about 8 years actually!
Eternal truths are bound up in these amazing stories of trust, sacrifice, joy, and assurance.
We began studying the beauty of the old hymns and their stories. What better hopes to teach our children?
We have spent a few years now learning new hymns, singing them at circle time, and repeating them at bedtime.
HOW TO STUDY HYMNS
To assist in memorizing them, we use copy work – check out my free printable below.
This helps the kids to see the words and learn them well.
We also watch YouTube clips during our circle time with the lyrics on the TV screen. This is a great visual and audio combination that impresses my kids and helps them learn the words with the melody.
We have also created our very own family Hymnbook with our favorites so we can sing along together.

I know my kids will listen to all different kinds of music as they grow and start to figure out what genre’s they like.
For now, though, I want to pour these sweet lyrics into them. My hope is that one day their words will minister to my children’s hearts during a time of need.
CHRISTMAS HYMNS
Did you know that many of the old Christmas Carols were written as hymns?
“Joy to the World, The Lord is come…“
“Hark the herald angels sing, ‘Glory to the new born King'”
This is a terrific book to use to share some of the background stories of these precious carols we sing every year!

SIMPLE HYMN RESOURCES
There are other great resources available to learn additional verses to these songs. We have an old classic hymnal that was gifted to us by a sweet pastor’s wife, which we reference often.
Hymnary.org has a search option by a hymn name where you can also find information about the writer, lyric pages, and other details.
This cute book Hymns for Kids is also a fantastic resource to help older kids learn about classic hymns.
